Douglas Kirkland is the photographer of the stars. Over six decades in the profession, he witnessed the evolution of Hollywood from its innocent days to a fierce show business. His portraits — Coco Chanel, Marilyn Monroe, Charles Chaplin, Brigitte Bardot — reveal the most intimate side of these icons.

Everyone knows him. This documentary features appearances by Sharon Stone, Andy Garcia, Nicole Kidman, Michelle Williams, Paris Hilton, Elle Fanning — all of whom were immortalized at some point by portrait photographer Douglas Kirkland (1934–2022). He began his career as an apprentice to Irving Penn in 1957, created a legendary photo essay of Coco Chanel (spending three weeks with her), and was the official photographer for more than 150 films: The Sound of Music, Out of Africa, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Saturday Night Fever, Titanic, Moulin Rouge… As obsessive as he was kind, Kirkland’s talent lay in capturing stars in that magical second of naturalness and vulnerability, revealing their most human side.
